The Problem
The historic Fort Atkinson is a a significant piece of American history. Mother Nature had taken its toll on the buildings causing structural failures in the Northeast Blockhouse building due to large cracks in its 30-inch-thick masonry walls, and failing wood shake shingle roofing. The deterioration threatened the building's integrity and its ability to withstand future generations.
The North Barracks, Southwest Blockhouse, and Powder Magazine buildings were also apart of the project. These buildings needed window restoration, structural repinning, tuckpointing, and other work.
Our Approach
To preserve this invaluable piece of history, TNT Tuckpointing, in collaboration with Wadsworth Construction, undertook a complex restoration project which was designed by Wiss, Janey Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) and overseen by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
The most intricate portions of the project were:
1) We meticulously rebuilt the damaged masonry wall, labeling each stone to ensure it was rebuilt in the same manor to enusure its authenticity and and longevity.
2) Wadsworth Construction expertly restored the building's historic roofing system, and complementing the masonry work and safeguarding the structure from the elements.
3) We installed some large Prosoco designed Sock Anchors to reinforce the existing walls on the North Barracks.
